Till now, China has capitalized on its low-cost manufacturing and large-scale infrastructure to remain the world’s largest exporter of textiles and apparel (T&A). However, its share in global T&A exports has declined from 35.6% in 2015 to 33.1% in 2024. This lost share has largely been captured by Bangladesh and Vietnam, whose exports have grown significantly in recent years.
Recently, the United States—the second-largest T&A market after the EU-27—has introduced notable changes in import duty rates. As of 5th September, an additional duty of 50% has been imposed on Indian exports to the U.S., whereas Bangladesh and Vietnam face an additional tariff of only 20%, giving them a clear competitive edge over India. These tariff changes are expected to significantly impact India’s export competitiveness in the U.S. market and may alter the positioning of leading T&A suppliers to the U.S. going forward.
